EDWARD M. DERON

Edward M. Deron joined Evans & Luptak in 1973 and became a partner in January, 1980. Mr. Deron was born in Detroit, Michigan and obtained his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University in 1968 (B.S. in Business Administration with a major in accounting).  He obtained his Juris Doctor degree (Cum Laude) from Wayne State University Law School in 1972 and his Masters of Law (in Taxation) degree from New York University School of Law in 1973.

Mr. Deron was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1972, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit in 1973 and the U.S. Tax Court in 1974.

Mr. Deron specializes in the areas of taxation, business and estate planning and probate administration.  His experience in the taxation area has included both planning, as well as taxpayer representation before the Internal Revenue Service, Michigan Department of Treasury and the courts.  His tax planning experience has included such areas as acquisitions, mergers, liquidations, recapitalization, stock redemptions, S corporations, partnership, limited liability companies and tax-exempt organizations, while his taxpayer representation experience has included (a) dealing with IRS and Michigan Department of Treasury personnel at various levels, (b) preparation of tax protests, refund claims, requests for Private Letter Rulings, offers in compromise and all manner of pleadings involved in U.S. Tax Court and United States District Court Refund Actions covering such areas as federal income taxes (both corporate and personal) accumulated earnings taxes, partnerships, S corporation, estate taxes, civil fraud, negligence penalties and the 100% penalty on responsible persons for employment taxes, (c) appealing adverse decisions of the U.S. Tax Court, (d) handling informal conferences with the Legal and Hearings Division of the Michigan Department of Treasury and preparation of all manner of pleadings involved in Michigan Tax Tribunal cases, and (e) defending against appeals of a favorable Michigan Tax Tribunal Decision before the Michigan Court of Appeals and Michigan Supreme Court.

Mr. Deron’s estate planning and probate experience includes lifetime gift planning; drafting wills, revocable living trusts, irrevocable trusts, generation skipping trusts, qualified personal residence trusts, durable powers of attorney and medical powers for clients with various degrees of wealth; post death estate planning, probate administration and the preparation of personal federal, state and local income tax returns, gift and estate tax returns and federal and state estate and trust income tax returns.

Mr. Deron is a member of the American Bar Association (Business Law; Real Property, Probate and Trust Law; and Taxation Sections), Oakland County Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan (Corporate, Finance and Business Law; Probate and Estate Planning; Real Property Law; and Taxation Sections).  He has served as co-chair of the Taxation Committee of the Metropolitan Detroit Bar Association and has been actively involved in the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan, having served as chair of its Estates and Trusts Committee, council member, editor of the Michigan Tax Lawyer, secretary, treasurer, vice chairperson and as chairperson of the Taxation Section. Mr. Deron is also a member of the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Metropolitan Detroit.

Mr. Deron has authored a chapter on “Income and Other Taxes” in ICLE’s Trust Administration In Michigan which was published in 1999 and updated in 2003, written for the Michigan Tax Lawyer and lectured on tax matters to both professional and lay groups.
