Michael J. Mehr became a partner at Evans & Luptak in 1973. He was born in London, Ontario, Canada in 1941 and is a United States citizen. Mr. Mehr graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in the School of Business in 1963, with a major in accounting. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School, entered the United States Army in 1967 and returned to practice law with Evans & Luptak at the end of 1968. In 1969, he managed one of the largest Michigan real estate closings, which was an acquisition of one of the largest real estate companies in Michigan and has continued to specialize in the real estate area. His real estate practice includes work in the areas of negotiations, drafting and structuring financing transactions with banks, life insurance companies, pension funds and syndications and income tax planning in connection with the organization, ownership, operation, acquisition, and sale of real estate projects. In addition, his work concentrates on federal tax planning and controversies, corporate practice, including mergers and acquisitions, general corporate matters, and financial transactions. His practice includes extensive representation of closely-held corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships and joint ventures; estate planning, which includes foundations, and regulatory work with the State of Michigan Attorney General’s Office for charitable trusts; and Michigan income and single-business tax controversies with the Attorney General’s Office and federal income tax controversy work with the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Justice. Mr. Mehr has been active in the State Bar of Michigan Real Property Section and has served as moderator and speaker in several real estate programs. Mr. Mehr has co-authored and published Law Review articles in the real estate area, one of which has been cited as a resource in several federal reported case decisions involving the area of broken real estate loan commitments. Mr. Mehr is a member of the American Bar Association, Oakland County Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan and the Michigan State Bar Real Property Law, Taxation, Business Law, and Probate & Estate Planning Sections. |
